Jet Lag DUring Air Travels

The air travels are often associated with the onset of jet lag problems. The symptoms and intensity of jet lag might vary from person to person.

The manifestation of jet lag may be in the form of dizziness, minor disorientation of space and time, sleeplessness, and loss of body fluid. Unfortunately, the occurrence of these problems might take away the pleasure of travels.

On business trips, it might prove to be a nuisance as this nagging problem might continue for few days after the air travel. The onset of this problem is due to the difference in the time zone and the response the biological clock. 

But, by taking some precautionary steps the effects of the jet lags could be minimised during air travels. They can be as follows – 

It is important to control the level of stress during air travel as it might trigger a jet lag. In fact, it may compound the effects of dizziness that might naturally occur after air travels.

It is not advisable to indulge in late parties and alcohol as the ‘hungover ‘ effect might have a more deleterious effect. A healthy body and mind before the air travel is important.

So, exercises and good eating habits are of paramount importance in avoiding the effects of jet lag during air travels. Air travels should be avoided during illness, as the jet lag can deactivate your immune systems to certain extent.

Drinking lot of fluid before the air travel is an important precaution, which should be diligently adhered to. The dehydration actually compounds the jet lag effects in a big way even afterwards.

During the air travels, the fluids should be taken from the beverage carts to keep the moisture content in the body in tact. Alcohols should be avoided as it would imbalance the body’s natural defence against dehydration.

The dehydration may lead to feeling of dizziness, head reeling, nausea, disorientation and fainting. In acute forms, the body might collapse.

Hence, during air travels and even afterwards, one should take plenty of water, regardless of the fact, whether you feel thirsty or not.

After due consultation with your doctor, you can take due medication with you to prevent the effects of jet lag.

You can even take a special pillow that might induce good sleep, if you are travelling for a long distance and time. Sleeping during air travels, certainly prevents the effects of jet lags.

Exercising is one of the ways of fighting the jet lags. Although you might end up looking silly, it is recommended that you do the stretching and bending exercises even on the aisles without disturbing the fellow passengers.

The whole idea behind all these is to maintain the flow of blood inside your body and especially to your head. Even sitting exercises can be done after the safety belt is off. 

These are some of the tips that should be taken care during air travels to keep the jet lag at bay.

I hate jet lag. I usually try to prepare ahead of time by going to bed a little earlier or later depending on where I'm traveling. By adjusting my sleep schedule, it does help me get over jet lag quicker. I also try to sleep or stay awake on the plane depending on the time of day of my destination. This seems to help too.
